CART=Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART)

Other terms include “human-generated captions” or “live captions” or “realtime captions”

CART is an accurate, verbatim, near-instantaneous live conversion of the spoken language into text by a professional captioner. The stenographer uses a stenotype machine, a laptop, and software to produce the text. In addition to capturing the speaker’s communication, CART providers also include environmental cues and are sensitive to the consumer’s needs.

The captions are viewed on a screen, laptop, or mobile device and used in a variety of settings: lectures, presentations, meetings, or events. CART is often preferred over automatic captions in legal and medical settings for technical accuracy.

CART is an “Auxiliary aid and service” under the ADA Effective Communication.

The acronym CART is also “Computer-assisted real-time transcription”
