The consumer brings a small microphone, which is proprietary to the hearing aid brand they use. The person speaking wears the remote microphone and sound goes directly into the consumer’s hearing instruments.

Personal amplification devices provide access to communication in one-on-one settings at home or in public, such as

  • At home, personal activities
    • Conversations, one-on-one
    • Small groups, passing around the microphone with a few people
    • Car conversations
    • Catholic confessionals
    • Connecting to telephones, TV, and devices (with appropriate features)
  • As an ADA public accommodation (provided by the facility). These can provide “auxiliary aids and services” under Effective Communication with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Consumers can request this as an accommodation or facilities and institutions can be proactive and offer these accommodations. Consumers with hearing loss can be hesitant to ask for accommodations, and these accommodations are rarely offered without requests.

    • Legal settings. These devices can help during client visits and other one-on-one settings.
    • Audiology and hearing instrument specialist appointments
    • Talking to a checkout clerk or service counter at a store
